The bell over the bakery door chimed, soft as a sigh, and Emma looked up from the swirl of frosting she was coaxing into a rose. Outside, autumn leaves blew like confetti, but in here, the world smelled of sugar and vanilla.
“Smells like happiness in here,” a customer murmured as he leaned against the counter. He was holding a paperback…worn edges, a corner folded like a secret.
Emma smiled. “Cupcakes or kisses?”
“Can’t I have both?” he asked, opening the book with a grin.
